By William Trepp

With less than 45 days left in 2012, it is time to spend those healthcare dollars in your Flex Spend account. This is especially important this year because the 2012 Healthcare Reform Act greatly reduces the size of your flex spend account in 2013.

Why Should You Have A Dentist Supervise Your Tooth Whitening After Orthodontics?

By William Trepp

Yes, over the counter tooth whitening products are cheaper than a customized tray home whitening kit from your dentist, but there are reasons to consider a dentist supervised program.

  1. Single discolored teeth often have an asymptomatic infection that can be detected by a dentist’s screening radiograph(X-ray) and the cause of the discoloration could be treated rather than just be covered up by whitening.
  2. Your dentist can look at your teeth for tooth colored fillings, show you where they are located and discuss the implications if the filling won’t whiten.
  3. Your dentist can smooth tooth edge unevenness so your tooth will look even better after it is whitened.
  4. If you have sensitive teeth, your dentist can give you a prescription grade tooth desensitizer to use in your tray before you begin whitening.
  5. The whitening agent composition, strength and safety is known in the system offered by your dentist but with an over the counter (OTC) purchase, the agent might be unknown.

What does “Voted Best Orthodontist” in a magazine really mean?

By William Trepp

In most cases, it means that the business voted best has probably taken out a paid advertisement in the magazine. In the April 2012 AJO-DO Journal, Peter Greco states “Quality in specialty care is not determined by an election or by a public-opinion poll. Quality is an attribute that is developed over time, comprising clinical expertise, effective practice management, and old-fashioned compassion for every patient.”

Ever had trouble removing your invisalign teen aligner?

By William Trepp

When your aligner has lots of attachments or retentive bumps, it can be difficult to remove. The trick to ease removal is to start removing the aligner by pulling down your aligner on the tongue side of your back tooth closest to your throat. Because most the bumps are on the check side of your teeth, as your aligner is displaced downward off your back tooth, try to spread/move your aligner towards your cheek, as you work on pulling it off your teeth going in order from your back teeth to front teeth. By stretching your aligner towards your cheek, you are also lifting your aligner off of the retentive bumps.

Economy forces orthodontists to streamline delivery systems to keep fees reasonable.

By William Trepp

Elective procedures such as plastic surgery and orthodontics have been particularly hard hit by the economy. Many orthodontists saw their business off by 30% at the worst of the economic downturn.  As a result orthodontics have had to examine their business operations to eliminate unnecessary expense. Orthodontic fees have been kept affordable by cutting delivery expense and offering finance plans to patients. Orthodontic fees have been level in comparison to the alarming rate rise of many other products such as milk or petroleum fuels.

Why do inflamed gums need to be treated before orthodontic care can begin?

By William Trepp

Orthodontic tooth movement depends on the gums and bone around a tooth to reshape as a tooth is moved through them. If the gums and bone are inflamed, the orthodontic forces can accelerate damage to the bone at a faster rate than inflammation would on its own. That’s why orthodontists need the help of your family dentist or periodontist to control the inflammation before orthodontic care can begin.
