The nationwide average for regular comprehensive orthodontic treatment is 27 months. Recently, some companies have been advertising to dentists that they can build their practices by focusing on cosmetic appearance using a system that takes 6 months. Dentists are being told they can attend a two-day hands on training seminar and treat people when they return to their practices. In addition, general dentists are being told orthodontic experience is not required to begin implementing the system.

An orthodontic specialist must complete an accredited orthodontic
residency program after becoming a dentist. This residency requires a minimum of two academic years of orthodontic study. Total dental education time 6-7 years.
A general dentist who does orthodontics may have no orthodontic residency and a total dental education time of just 4 years.
You trust your heart to a cardiologist, your skin to a dermatologist, your knees to an orthopedist. Like these specialists who study their specialty areas after their general medical education, orthodontists devote additional years of study to orthodontics after they graduate from dental school. And like their medical counterparts, orthodontists limit their practices to their specialty area. Orthodontists have in-depth experience in orthodontic care. They use their knowledge and skills to help you get the best results possible.
