Patient Cooperation Using Braces

A key to successful orthodontic care is good patient cooperation. The braces patient must physically contribute more to their treatment than any other form of dental care. In most instances in regular dental care, the patient only has to open their mouth and the dentist will do all the work. In orthodontic care, many orthodontists feel that the patient should agree to the following.

I understand that the success of my treatment is dependent on my cooperation in these eight areas:

  1. Brushing after meals, flossing and rinsing my teeth daily to get out all the stuff my toothbrush misses.
  2. Avoiding hard, chewy, icy and sticky foods.
  3. Minimizing sweets including soft drinks.
  4. Refraining from tobacco use.
  5. Avoiding picking at my braces with my hands or other objects.
  6. Wearing elastics, headgear and retainers as prescribed.
  7. Keeping my scheduled appointments.
  8. Calling my orthodontist immediately when I have a loose or broken appliance.
If I change my mind about this agreement at any time, I promise to tell my orthodontist about my decision.

My effort = My treatment result.  It's just that simple!
